6 Gifts for the Debut Novelist
The debut author is slightly better off. He has less needs than the struggling writer. He sees light at the end of the tunnel after a long struggle. His days of rejection slips are over. His book has been released. He now eagerly awaits reactions from the reading public and critics. In this holiday season, what could be the best gift for him? Here is my list.
1. An honest review, and a fair review, which will establish his standing amongst his peers. It will tell him where his book stands in the milieu, and might give it the necessary fillip to make it to a bestseller list, when his joy will know no bounds.
2. A leather-bound notebook for his thoughts, for even with the satisfaction of seeing his book out in the public domain, he might be thinking of his next book and he will take a walk sometime to refresh himself, and what if inspiration strikes on the road like a bolt from the blue sky.
3. A supply of coffee or tea, for caffeine is the most innocent of intoxicants, and many a great writer has sought solace in their chemical shoulders after yet another scathing review or poor sales.
4. A comfortable chair with a reclining back, for he deserves his hours of rest after burning his brain. If he has such a chair, why not a bookshelf to keep it company with enough space for a drink and space for books and stuff with an alarm clock on top so that he doesn’t become too complacent.
5. A yoga instruction manual particularly with details of pranayama and an exercise mat, for the debut writer is under a lot of stress and what better way to soothe his frayed nerves but pranayama in the morning.
6. Buy his book and gifting it to your friends for what matters most to a debut author after all the praise and the harsh words is sales, sales, sales!!!
What would you add to the list?

My favorite is the coffee one… >.> num num coffee
Amen to that
I like numbe 6, praising your friend’s book to others. I just finished publishing my first book and to have a stranger come up and say, with an awed look about them, “So, you’re an author!” is a swelling-up-inside-I-feel-good-about-myself feeling!
I add:
blog about the book. tidbits from here and there … will sure be good promotion
Great idea. Thanks!!!
I like the yoga idea. Maybe I should take it up. But a review… oh for a review. To know that among those ten kind people who have bought it already, and the 20 who have downloaded its sample… that one has actually READ IT!
