Beginning with the Ending

I have this pile of books by my side. The dog is nearby, sleeping on another pile. I am reading to catch up. I look through the books. First one, I toss aside. No names, please. Names cause strife. The blurb is enticing enough, but when I steal a glance at the ending, something didn’t feel right. The words, I think. The next book, the ending I liked. No, not how it ended, but how the words came together to say something sensible, beautiful even. It held my attention. I began reading. Like a good beginning, endings also matter. Have you done the same with writing? Have you ever written the other way around, beginning with the ending first?

Prolific or Prodigious: What would you rather be as a writer?

As a writer how would you like to be remembered: a one book wonder, who never found enough words to write another, but with the legacy of a work that was well received; or would you rather be someone who reeled off one book after the other like a well-oiled writing machine. I had a bit of an idea, and began compiling a list of books whose authors managed only one notable work of fiction in their life time. The first list threw up a lot of surprises. In the list were writers I enjoyed over the years and whose work I kept reading and re-reading.

Ten books that stay with you

Everybody has a list of books, albeit a constantly changing one, of books that stay with your thoughts long after it had been put away, books that you can’t help rereading once in a while, books you keeping going back to because you fell in love with the words or its characters, the whole story, all its nuances. There could be hundreds of reasons why you fell in love with one particular book. You must have been down in the dumps for a while, and it cheered you up. Books that felt a part of you when you were growing up. Books that inspired. Books that made you cry. Books that touched your heart. Books that made you angry, books that left you feeling helpless.
