The Rise and Rise of eBooks

The publishing world is changing and how. The rise of eBooks in the digital publishing world has forever changed the landscape of publishing. The world has come a long way since the launch of the first eBook reader way back in 1998. So what’s new? The Association of American Publishers (AAP) reported that sales were down 21% over the same period 2009, which is, well, old hat. But, surprise, surprise, sale of eBooks was up 158% for the same period and 188% over last year. Publish or Perish

Columnist Ken Auletta of The New Yorker has an interesting take on the launch of the iPad and its impact on publishing in general, but I can’t possibly understand what he meant by ‘Can the iPad topple the Kindle, and save the book business?’ Ok, Amazon has a competitor at long last, but are they that dumb? Ok, ok, Apple has lined up half a dozen of the ‘big’ publishers to sell their e-books through Apple’s iBook store, but what about pricing? With the kind of book prices being talked about, does the iPad experience count over that of the Kindle, which was designed in the first place to read more like a book?
